Not even finished with my photo upgrade, I somehow got it in my head that I had to try Movable Type.

One thing at a time, right? Maybe not. Anyway, Movable Type seems very cool so far. Compared to my old blogging package, Blosxom, it’s certainly more professional and thorough. I’m not 100% convinced yet, but it looks like I’ll be switching. The installation was a bit more involved than Blosxom’s, but within an hour (and thanks to this import script), I had my test blog up and running with all of my old entries in place. The next step is to see if I can bring the old beautiful look to the new system.

Update: I’m sold. As you can see, I’m on the new system. Now to adjust the look!

You mean bloated but relatively turnkey, I would enthusiastically agree! 7mb for this thing? And a 15 step usage and install system? The beauty of blosxom is that it does everything in about 200 lines of perl and barely makes you learn anything new for its editing or taxonomy - what’s the case for switching?

I guess it’s all a matter of how when you want to do the bulk of your work. Sure Blosxom is elegant and small and easy to install initially. But I have spent hours configuring it to do what every blog should anyway, and they were crude kludges when finished.

Movable Type took me a lot longer to install and configure correctly - a whole hour or two - but it already does all the stuff that Blosxom did and lots more.
